As our nation moves closer to a sustained state of war against terrorist groups and their sponsors we must come to the realization that things will be different and that we must prepare ourselves and our families for new possibilities that may affect our personal freedoms, mobility and our individual survival. The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the pentagon as well as the use of commercial aircraft as human bombs demonstrates that these terrorists consider tax-paying civilians as enemies of Islam and legitimate military targets. With this in mind we must prepare for additional aggression against civilian targets throughout the Continental US as well as Americans and American interests throughout the world. This aggression can be expected to take many forms and could include the use of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) Weapons. The following is a partial list of issues that we may consider in creating personal emergency survival plans for our families to embrace. The ideas expressed in this document are based on common sense and are meant for general information only. The product links in this document are meant to assist users and are not endorsements for any particular product or service. We welcome any additional ideas and resources that will improve this document. A family disaster plan is a good idea in case of wartime or natural disasters such as flood, hurricane, fire, etc. 1. PASSPORTS AND PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION: The international community recognizes only one form of identification and that is a current passport. It is recommended that all family members including adults and children have current passports. Applications can be made at specified postal facilities. Online http://travel.state.gov/passport_services.html. Photos are available through AAA and Kinko’s copy centers. Don’t delay apply now it takes weeks. 2. FAMILY PHOTOS: Collect the most current photos for individual family members as well as group shots. Write names, ages, height, weight and other info on the reverse of the photos. Keep these photos in a place where they are quickly accessible. 3. IMPORTANT PAPERS: Passports, drivers licenses, SS cards, marriage certificate, birth certificates, deeds, titles, securites and other important papers should also be gathered and stored in a place where they can be quickly accessed. 4. A list of all important phone, email, fax, cell phone numbers as well as appropriate addresses: <ul> <li>Individual family members </li> <li>School, daycare, work etc. </li> <li>Emergency services – FEMA </li> <li>Government agencies (Congressional e-mail directory) </li> <li>Red Cross Store in your laptop, palm pilot or reduce to wallet sized laminated format for easy access. Each family member (including children should have this card with them at all times.) </li> <li>FBI Field Office Directory</li> </ul> 5. CASH: If the banks are closed and telecom lines are down you will not be able to access cash or even use your credit cards. Set aside as much cash as you can reasonably afford in case of a banking related emergency. (Include precious metals and jewelry.) 6. COMMUNICATIONS/INFORMATION: <ul> <li>Solar powered radio (compact free play am/fm radio #BG601BLU at sharperimage.com.)</li> <li>Cell phone and charger (keep it charged) </li> <li>CB </li> <li>Personal Communication System – Lap Top, Palm pilot, Pager, Etc.</li> </ul> 7.
